CONFIRMED: AppRadio 2 Firmware Updates Will Be Done Through USB

You will need a USB pen-drive to update AppRadio 2 in the future
According to reliable sources, the USB port on Pioneer AppRadio 2's iPhone cable will be used to load firmware updates as they become available in the future. AppRadio 2 lacks a micro-SD card slot like the one seen on the first generation AppRadio which caused doubts about how firmware upgrades will take place. But, I can now confirm the use of the USB port to get the updates done.
Whenever new updates become available you would have to download the files onto a USB pen-drive and plug it in through the cable. AppRadio 2 would then automatically recognize the firmware files on the drive and perform the update.

We are still hoping for some of the pop up messages to be done away with by Pioneer with a software update. The second generation device has been around for a little over 2 weeks now. Stay tuned for more.

  1. So with the USB cable hidden back inside the dash, how are we supposed to do an update, take the dash apart, or take the vehicle back to the installer for the update, and get charged for it?

    1. The AppRadio 2 USB cable has a male to female connecter along the length of the cable before the iPod Plug. So it's easier to get to.

  2. Most installers know to keep that part of the cable exposed. Besides, you need that much of the cable exposed to have enough length to have your phone reach you and your ear if you wanna talk privately on a phone call.

  3. What about those of us who are using Android. Why would we have that cable even attached?

    1. Doesn't the Android connection kit come with a USB cable? I thought it did.

    2. It does, but that USB cable to mounted to a power source. Not connected to the Head unit itself for Data transfer.
Since I had to redo my e-brake wire anyways, I went ahead an hooked up the iPod cable to the back of the unit and shoved it into my glove box. So if I need to do an update I can access it from there. Or by chance someone with an iPod/iPohone rides in my car, they can hook up to the connection, if they want to. LOL

  4. I don't think the android cable is released yet. They barely put the price for it up the other day when i brought it to their attention. For me its just a touch radio without the android kit

  5. That damn usb cable is so far down the line! This sucks. Now I have a choice of having 3 feet of cable exposed (I only need 1 foot) or pulling the dash apart. This make no sense to me, why can't the update just upload straight from the phone? It does have internet ya know...

  6. I think I'm returning my appradio2. It's too buggy and there are very few apps for it. Like maybe 5. Don't be fooled by the 25 they suggest. Most are just different maps for the Nav app. I'm even having issues switching between Pandora and iPod mode....really?

    Lame!

  7. Is it possible to stream from the SIRIUS XM app (iphone) to the radio via bluetooth or other audio connection?

  8. This radio blows. It's so buggy and there's no support from pioneer. And yea there's 5 apps for ios and non for andriod( sorry guys)
Spend the money on a better product. This thing sucks. Pioneer sucks. I used to like them but there quality sucks now. And the whole thing with having to plug in a thumb drive to update it. So dumb. Why not do it right through the useless app radio app. All that thing does as of now is piss us off.

  9. It's hard to know who to blame for the Appradio disappointment. The idea is awesome, the execution, lacking. We could blame the Pioneer legal team for insisting that they do so much to protect themselves from a law suit that they have crippled the head unit into a pain. Yes, I get it, I know not to watch video while I am driving. Do I really need to acknowledge that 5 times a day?

Or should we blame the marketing type, who named the device "AppRadio". Seriously? It plays pandora, can access you ipod and works with a killer navigation app, MotionX. But "Appradio" creates an expectation that this box does not come close to meeting. In fact, the first version was more app friendly.

Or should we blame the programmers. The reviews are true. This software is a buggy as it comes. constantly getting blank screens. Switching between Pandora and Ipod modes can get stuck (to reboot, turn your car off). And more issues too. Hoping for an update to address.... Not returning yet,,,, It does have great potential.
