iPhone 4/4S Running iOS 7 Incompatible With First Generation AppRadio

Apple launched its latest mobile operating system, iOS 7, yesterday. Within hours of the OS becoming available for download, Pioneer Electronics sent out emails to its AppRadio customers informing them of issues with the first generation AppRadio (SPH-DA01 and SPH-DA02) and iOS 7.

Here's the email…

Dear Valued Pioneer Customer,

With the introduction of Apple's new iOS 7 mobile operating system, Pioneer has discovered an incompatibility when connecting an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S to a first generation AppRadio SPH-DA01 or SPH-DA02.

When connected to an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S updated to iOS 7, the AppRadio SPH-DA01 and SPH-DA02 will generate error messages when attempting to launch AppRadio Mode, Pandora, iPod playback or Bluetooth calling. The only way to resolve these error messages is to disconnect the iPhone and to reset the AppRadio. For this reason, to ensure compatibility with your SPH-DA01 or SPH-DA02, Pioneer strongly recommends that you not upgrade your compatible iPhone to iOS 7 until further notice.

We deeply value you as a Pioneer customer and are committed to providing you with the most up to date compatibility information.

Please note: AppRadio 2 (SPH-DA100) and AppRadio 3 (SPH-DA110 and SPH-DA210) are not affected.

Sincerely,

Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.

A few observations from the email and some notes…

1. Pioneer suggests not to upgrade "until further notice". This could mean that they may be working on a compatibility fix which may be coming soon.
2. If you aren't familiar with resetting the first generation AppRadio all you have to do is use a pointed object like a pen to press down the reset button which sits within the door for the MicroSD card slot on the AppRadio.
3. Apple is now allowing users with older hardware (iPhones, iPads, iPods etc.) to downgrade to older iOS versions. So if you have an iPhone 4 or 4S and have installed iOS 7 and lost compatibility with the first generation AppRadio you can try to downgrade to iOS 6.1.4 through iTunes. iOS 6.1.4 is compatible with the first generation AppRadio.

Hopefully a fix is coming soon.

  1. How could Pioneer be caught off guard by this IOS update? The dev software has been available since mid summer. Have your early adopters been forgotten?

  2. I agree with Joe. I have a AVH-X8500BHS and after upgrading to iOS7 bluetooth audio controls dont work now.

  3. Anyone having any luck with IOS 7 on an iPhone 4S with an AVH-X3500BHS? I have one in each car and enjoy my Waze app on the screen. I want to update my phone; but it is more important that Waze work correctly... Any takers?

  4. I have been using the AppRadio for some time now and I NEVER EVER use the app radio app to run my programs for the phone... for some reason it seems to mess up the GPS signal causing for the MotionX and any other navigation app to loose track of where I am. So I wonder, since I don't use the direct app to run applications, would it still work the same way if I update my iPhone 4s to the new iOS7? Has anyone tried it yet? I always click IGNORE every time my phone tries to connect to the AppRadio app on my phone, and everything seems to work fine that way...

  5. Pioneer have to be aware that those that bought one of their first appradios are those that allow them to improve their products and by any reason must be left with a simple "until further notice".

  7. All I have to say is: Pioneer had better keep even the 1st generation buyers happy or there will certainly be repercussions that they will NOT like!! Such as loss of confidence (by consumers) in their product support which will, in turn, cause people to stop buying their products!

  8. I fucked up big by switching to ios 7. I used my car to deliver weekly and rely heavy on my gps app and music. Pioneer should knip this in the but real quick. I am a very unhappy camper not being able to use my Appradio.

    1. I did the same now my appradio sph-da02 is useless. DO NOT UPRGRADE UNTIL PIONEER FIXES THIS IF THEY EVER DO!!

  9. Even loading my iPhone 4S I is impossible, I get an error.

  10. Eek! I really hope they resolve this soon! It's bad enough that I had to get a 4S instead of a 5 because the AppRadio isn't compliant - now I can't even upgrade the iOS?!? Come ON, Pioneer! >8^(

  11. A software update for app radio 1 is due, therw are jut too many bugs and lack of functions that should be easily fixed with a firmware update, i've been considering buying an appradio 3 but lack of common decency with the customers have kept me from doing so

  12. I went here to check for compability with my iPhone 4S and my AppRadio 1, well it will keep me waiting then. Thank you for this great site for us AppRadio owners!

  13. It's bad enough that we had to stay away from iPhone 5's without replacing the AppRadio unit but now to have to stay away from a new iOS is killing me. A firmware update would solve so much.

  14. I will be switching to JVC,
sorry folks but this is BS

  15. Pioneer really needs to fix this soon. There are a lot of unhappy people out here with the AppRadio 1. It is funny that they can tell you what's going on with the AppRadio 3 and leave the Pioneers (the people who gave feedback to improve the Appradio) in the dark. Bad business!!! I don't plan on switching phones, but I will switch radios if it not fixed soon.

  16. so,,, it's not just me, that's good. I thought I was loosing it. The system just plays random songs whenever it wants upon connection. Seems to be glitchy. I'm running a IPhone 4 and was hoping NOT to upgrade to a 5S until Christmas.

  17. J - O - K - E !!

I have strugged through the ups and downs of this unit....... crashes, rear camera stuck, apps not working etc but I still promote this amongst my co car owners on my forum but this is the worst thing so far!!

    Come on!!

Bad enough that apple, after YEARS of having the same connector suddenly rouned every apple dock in my house but now a software update means that the radio doesn't work!!

I may as well rip it out and just use the hole as a storage area for my A-to-Z and a sony walkman!

  18. Glad to see everyone is on the same page. We definitely need a firmware update. If pioneer leaves us all hanging, then they will lose their entire original customer base. Clock is ticking

  20. Agreed, we need a firmware update. I wish someone could write an open source firmware update since all the pioneer software has been worthless anyways.

  22. This is unacceptable. This update has been known to be coming out for months now. Since Pioneer can't keep up with Apple Software's compatibility, how about they take a page out of Apple's book and allow 1st gen App Radio customers to trade in their units for a credit on the newer models?

    ReplyDelete

    1. i brought that to Pioneer's attention today and they wont credit nor will they upgrade. they also argue the fact that the error is from IOS7. im on the phone with now and they want to tell me that i have to pay to ship it out to them even though its all covered within warranty.

  23. I just stumbled on to a workaround.

I have an iPhone 4s (IOS7) and an Appradio SPH-DA01

    1) Open the Appradio version of iHeartradio (I assumed any app will work) on your phone
    2) Plug your phone into the Appradio
    3) If the app is running, press ok on the "Never drive..." warning
    4) My app worked like it did in IOS6
    5) Also, you can hit the Appradio home button to scroll through the other apps and run them

Hopefully this will help someone while we wait for an update. If it comes...

  24. Just to let everyone know, I have an iPhone 4 updated to iOS7, and it has worked with my SPH-DA01 AppRadio for almost a week. All my app's that were compatible when I has iOS6 still worked perfectly as well. My boyfriend then tried to play video through it and that seemed to mess it up some, but my "Fatal Application Error" went away after turning my car off (for about ten/twenty mins) and turning it back on again. Don't lose hope with it!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Pioneer should not only come up very soon with an upgrade for IOS 7, they should also allow the SD CARD to be used to play music. We are very limited with those units.

  26. My radio (dao1) worked perfectly fine, then all of the sudden out of no where boom- Fatal error when plugging in my phone. I must of reset this unit 30x in the last 2 days it would work fine and then just all of the sudden error..The sun flower seed i have been using to reset has even gave up. The radio is now flat out in paper weight mode. I reset. touch anything on the radio, without even connecting my phone and the fatal error pops up. Nothing at all works on the unit anymore. I am at complete aww.. Being one of the original buyers promoters of this device makes me sick to my stomach. Ive talked atleast 5 other people into purchasing an appradio in the past year or so And now im the one stuck with a paper weight in my car.

Not to mention on hot days condensation builds up behind the glass that i cant seem to get rid of.

Called pioneer and they basically told me its not io7 and its a repair issue in which they expect me to PAY to fix the issue that was caused by their lack of compatibility. Now i see why apple wanted nothing to do with this piece of shit. Should of known better.

So if u keep pushing that reset button, im sure you will be getting the same exact issue i have and it will ruin the unit. it not having an actual off button puts you even at risk.

So do yourself a favor and purchase something else. Because pioneer clearly doesnt care about its customer base and clearly expects us to fork money out for product that they dont even make sure does what its supposed to do.

  28. I have loved my original APPRadio and I was considering upgrading to a newer model soon. However, this latest SNAFU by Pioneer has caused me pause. This may seem like a catch22 but it is not: I will not be buying a newer APPRadio until I see that Pioneer provides the most basic support for its earlier models. Pioneer, you have until mid October (that's plenty of time!) to get this worked out, if not, I will be buying a JVC.

    ReplyDelete
  29. crap! and total BS! Im selling this POS and never buying another pioneer product again! I'm tired of all the problems I have with this thing and broken promises of updates that never happen. DONE!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh really. So this is how Pioneer is going to support their products. So much for the consumer. I will never purchase another Pioneer product. I've owned this piece of garbage for less than ten months. It's never worked properly from day one. Promise continuing updates but then pull the rug out from under us. Word of mouth travels fast and for Pioneer this is a product fiasco. Shame on you Pioneer!

    ReplyDelete
  31. This is unacceptable by Pioneer, I will have to sell mine now and get a Sony or JVC.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would much rather have Pioneer say we don't have a fix and we will credit you towards a newer model rather than to be in the dark for weeks not being able to upgrade my phone. I will definitely not buy another Pioneer product. If they introduced this radio specifically for the iPhone, then why not keep the radio up to date with the iphone. They new that Apple updates their phones every year. IDIOTS!!!! You have lost one loyal customer.

  33. i upgraded to the beta 6 version of ios 7 and it worked for a while with my sph da02. now not any more.... any ideas as to why it work for a period of time then stopped??

    ReplyDelete
  34. I just got off the phone with Pioneer tech support.

He said that Pioneer is still supporting the SPH-DA01 and DA02 models. In fact, they already have a fix for it but they are waiting on Apple to approve it before it can be released.

    Pure Apple politics...

  35. Still not updated sad just sad Pioneer Support Sucks my left nut

    ReplyDelete
  36. .....this still sits with Pioneer - they should have had it with Apple earlier .... i too have come to rely on this head unit and am so f"'cked off right now ..... sod it , i'm off to Halfords to buy an Alpine unit i should have done in the first place - Pioneer you have really dropped the ball on this one !

  37. It's the sheer lack on information that is most thoughtless. Hey - Pioneer we are your customers. Without customers your business goes down the tubes and you don't make your quarterly numbers. Without customers your business model is dead. Think about that and have the common courtesy to feed us valid and pertinent information. Find whoever wrote the email above and check their credentials in the marketing communications arena. Start acting like a professional corporation rather than a out-of-the-bedroom internet franchise!

  38. I'm highly annoyed at this. I have a SPH-DA02 and if my music player on my ios7 4s is playing then I immediately get a "Fatal Application Error" with the following information:
    Program: CIS.exe
    Exception: 0x80000002
    Address: 03F39D68

I've been able to still listen to music with this error displayed on the screen but its highly annoying!!

  39. Hi all,

I downgraded the pioneer firmware to 414 and removed the Pionner app from my iphone4 (running ios7, this will let you use the ipod mode on the stereo as usual - as long as you dont select the Apps you can play via ipod mode without any errors

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  40. The iPhone and Appradio are just not a good combination because of things like this. Pioneer does not seem interested in those of us who purchased an earlier unit. Just like the iPhone 5 requirement of a new adapter to use Appradio. Nothing but hassle after hassle. I'm getting rid of my iPhones ASAP and try Android on Appradio. If that does not work my Appradio will become a paper weight. I won't even try to sell it because I wouldn't want another person to go through all the problems I've had with this useless package.

    ReplyDelete
  41. So its almost a month now and you cant get this fixed shouldn't have taken over a day. Oh well your loss I'm changing out my head unit I need my GPS NOW not later I use it for work had to go buy an external gps and hands free Bluetooth. I am well known in the car industry and I have a saying. if I isn't broke don't fix it but if it does break throw it in the trash and tell everyone how much of a P.O.S it is for the rest of your life.... Yes I know with the money I spent on my new gps and Bluetooth I could have bought the newest appradio but if you cant fix this one why would I buy that one.

    ReplyDelete
  42. we have to write all these comments on the AppRadio Facebbok page, to make more pressure to Pioneer to fix this problem:

    https://www.facebook.com/PioneerAppRadio?fref=ts

    ReplyDelete
  43. I take it theres still no fix for this problem yet? I can't even sell the damn thing as its just as useless to everybody else as it is to me!
I think mines still under warranty actually, maybe I can return it as its not fit for purpose?

    ReplyDelete
  44. is there still no fix for this yet. totally useless that two huge companies as big as apple and pioneer cant fix a simple software compatability issue such as this more quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hi, open the latest version of EC Touch , connect your phone with ECTouch open, ECTouch will then appear on your head unit, press the home button then press apps, you should be able to open any of the compatable apps! it works for me?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Just spoke to a Pioneer Australia Technical Support staff who advised that, as far as he knows, Pioneer is not going to do anything about it. Basically, his attitude was "go suck!" Pioneer doesn't even sell 2nd Generation Appradios in OZ.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Total B######T!!! Pioneer just released an update for the Appradio 3. I was told by tech support at Crutchfield that Pioneer is not going to update firmware for the DA01, DA02 & DA100. So we all who have the the 1st and 2nd generation appradio are left with 'bricks'. Pioneer's answer it that we should have known that updates might not work with the radio. I have been a loyal customer, but I will never buy another product from Pioneer. I am done with this whole phone and radio crap. I have reinstalled my factory unit and am dealing with all of the wires.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I was thinking about upgrading the equipment but I agree the AppRadio one that I have does not have two years and it is also outdated I refuse to go through this blackmail him colocare the original eqipo my vehicle and never will acquire Pioneer

    ReplyDelete
  49. ...did a person not say that pioneer has a fix and is waiting for apples approval? Apple is notorious for that stuff. I love my iphone and loved the idea of that App radio. I have 2 of them a DA01 and a DA02...now I dont know what to get to replace them if Pioneer cant support the new IOS on my current 4...it's on its last leg and I'm about to get a 5s....looks like it may be time to part ways with the appradio...sad deal.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Thanks a lot Pioneer - I will be sure to not purchase a product from you again.

    ReplyDelete
  51. To all,
I called Pioneer and complained about the lack of support and the inconvience of the whole 1st generation AppRadio and iOS 7. CHECK THIS OUT!!! Pioneer is offering Generation 1 appradio owners (DA01 & DA02)the opportunity to purchase the DA210 model at a discounted rate of $123 plus taxes and shipping. You have to get a case number directly from Pioneer's customer service and send them your old unit. I know this may be a little of an inconvience, but if you love the concept of the AppRadio like I do, it is worth it. You are getting a $500 radio for $123 and you can still upgrade to the 5c or 5s when you are ready just by switching out the cable. Hope this helps.

  54. I work in the car audio industry.
This is not Pioneers fault, we have had nothing but phone calls about devices no longer working with the IOS7 update.
The update kills Appradios, doesn't work properly with Parrot kit and doesn't work with a lot of original fit vehicle bluetooth systems.

    1. I consider Pioneer to be primarily at fault because:
1- They had access to the developer version of iOS7. They should have tested and known of the incompatibilities ahead of the release.
2- They did not communicate with their customers until 5+ hours AFTER the release, during which time lots of people updated their phones.
3- They have been silent for over a month. They are not communicating with their customers.
