Pioneer Announces NavGate Head-Up Display (HUD) For Europe [Video]

Pioneer Europe has announced the release of a new product called NavGate Head-Up Display (HUD) for smartphone navigation apps. The device attaches to the driver's sun visor and projects traffic, navigation and other info through the windscreen.

Here are full details and a product video.

The positioning of the projected image, which is in full color, is just above the eye-line of the driver which means it allows the driver to keep his eyes on the road while driving. The device uses a DLP projector for great image quality. The NavGate HUD is compatible with the CoPilot and NNG's iGO Primo smartphone apps.

This announcement comes after Garmin announced a similar device in July. Garmin's device is called "Head-Up Display" or simply HUD. It is different in many ways from Pioneer's product. The main difference apart from the size (Pioneer NavGate HUD is huge compared to Garmin HUD) is that the projected image by the Garmin HUD is monochromatic.

In addition to projecting turn-by-turn directions, the NavGate HUD shows the time, the current speed and speed limits, speed and red-light camera warnings, the distance to destination and the estimated time of arrival. The device also has sensors which automatically adjust image brightness depending on the amount of ambient light.

Pioneer's NavGate HUD will be available from October 2013 at various car audio retailers across Europe. There is no information on price or whether the device will be available in the United States. There may be a name conflict if it ever came to the US though.

After looking at the product pictures above, I'm not sure how unobtrusive the device will actually be. It seems like it could easily obstruct the driver's view.

The video below is from Pioneer Europe. It shows the device working with an iPhone. There is no information if it will be compatible with Android.
