U.K. Government Wants To Ban The Use Of Google Glass While Driving [Report]

Google Glass hasn't even been launched yet but the device is already getting attention from driving safety proponents. The Department for Transport in the United Kingdom is aware of Google's upcoming device and is already discussing imposing a ban on its use while driving.

According to an exclusive report from the UK-based Stuff, a Department for Transport spokesman said, "We are aware of the impending rollout of Google Glass and are in discussion with the Police to ensure that individuals do no use this technology while driving". Safety concerns while driving were also cited in the statement.

To be fair to Google, their promo video for Glass shows the passenger wearing the device while driving on the Golden Gate Bridge as seen in the picture above. Maybe it's a subtle hint about the use while driving. Glass is designed to do everyday tasks you would do with a cell phone, like take pictures, record videos, get answers to general knowledge questions and even get directions.

In the same vein however, the promo video also shows a guy zipping through what looks like New York City traffic on a bike with Glass on. Take it a step further and you see someone flying a plane and recording a video using the device.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the device launches to the general public in 2014. Will the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) follow the UK Department for Transport by stepping in to avoid drivers from using Google Glass? Or will there be a loophole that will allow drivers to use the device while driving?
