Apple To Announce New iPhone On September 10 [Report]

In keeping with history and according to a reliable source, Apple will announce the next generation iPhone at a special event on September 10. The report comes from AllThingsD, which has a good record of predicting such events. Here is a list of things to expect from Apple from various rumors, both reliable and those not so much so.

From the rumor mill...

  • A low-budget iPhone, being called the iPhone 5C by many reporting sites, will be unveiled next month. It is believed to have a plastic body instead of the aluminosilicate one sported by the current iPhone 5.
  • Either an iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 which will be regularly priced and the true next generation device.
  • A full feature presentation of iOS 7 which was announced at WWDC 2013 in June.
  • The next generation iPhone is believed to have a fingerprint sensor.
  • Improved camera.
  • An Apple watch is probably going to be launched at some point. It is less likely to be released next month though. This holds true also for a television from Apple.
  • One of the less reliable rumors include a new retina iPad Mini.
Apple had announced in June that "iOS in the Car" won't be fully integrated until next year. So any new additions in this regard are doubtful next month.

A new iPhone means the possible need for a firmware update from Pioneer for AppRadio Mode devices. However, Beta versions of iOS 7 seem to work fine with current firmware. The next generation iPhone will have Apple's new lightning port which was introduced last September with iPhone 5 so there won't be any hardware issues in getting it connected to the head units.

With iOS 7 there is iTunes Radio which is a new music streaming service from Apple. It will be interesting to see how this will work with AppRadio. I would love to see a dedicated iTunes Radio interface on Pioneer head units.

Although the announcement will happen on September 10, we don't expect the next generation iPhone to be available for purchase until the end of September or early October. Preorders usually start a few days before the phone actually goes on sale.
