Question: How Do I Connect My iPhone 5 To The First-Gen AppRadio?

I receive this following question almost everyday in some form or the other: How do I connect my iPhone 5 to the first generation Pioneer AppRadio? The answer is simple.

The iPhone 5 is not supported by the first generation AppRadio.

The first generation AppRadio (SPH-DA01 and SPH-DA02) will only work with an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S. That means it only supports Apple's 30-pin connection. iPhone 5 has the new lightning connection which also exists in the iPad Mini.

Most people who write in say that they've had an iPhone 4 or 4S working fine with their first generation AppRadio but since upgrading to the iPhone 5 they can't seem to get it to work. Either that or they've just bought a first generation AppRadio but have an iPhone 5 and have tried using the 30-pin to lightning adapter but to no avail.

Even connecting the iPhone 5 connection kit from Pioneer (CD-IH202) will not do the trick. The first generation AppRadio isn't capable of supporting the newer lightning connection.

So if you're thinking of getting a first generation AppRadio because it's available on a nice discount, remember it's a two year old device and if you own an iPhone 5 you won't be able to use any functionality with your head unit.

Meanwhile, AppRadio 2 prices have dropped since the AppRadio 3 was announced. The AppRadio 2 is still a good head unit to have in your car and it is capable of connecting to the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and even select Android phones. You will just need the correct connection kit.

  1. Will there EVER be a connection kit available to connect an iphone 5? I don't think a 2-year old stereo should be THAT out of date that it can not connect to an iphone 5. Everything else has been able to adapt to the new iphone 5.

  5. pioneer your company and products are straight shit. Over complicated non user friendly garbage. Having a Bluetooth radio that doesnt bluetooth is some straight up genius shit. On top of that you cant update your units even when getting a 30pin to 8 pin plug lol. Yall should be sued for being incompetent. Eat shit and die sincerely a future alpine customer.
