Kickstarter Project Promises USB-C Car Charger For New MacBook

So you went out and bought a brand new MacBook. That invisibly slim, retina-display, 12-inch MacBook with only one USB-C port which Apple launched earlier this month. The shiny new hardware has come under some criticism for having just one USB-C port but that discussion is for another forum.

Why am I telling you about a MacBook on this website? Its because I came across a car charger made specifically for that device which you can pledge for on Kickstarter for quite a low price. Let me tell you more.

The Kickstarter project in focus here is HydraDock - a dock for the new MacBook which expands the single USB-C port into 11 different ports. But that's not the product I want to tell you about.

One of the other backer rewards in the campaign is a 12V USB-C car charger made for the new MacBook. The product can be yours if you pledge only $29 (that is $10 below the retail price). This backer reward is projected to ship in June. Shipping is free in the United States, while most other countries add $10.

Adding some charge to your MacBook in your car can be useful to some folks. Finding a power outlet is not always easy so juicing up your device on the way there could save you some trouble.

The HydraDock campaign had reached its funding goal of $35,000 at the time of this post. This campaign was just launched a few days back and the initial response has been tremendous. USB-C is a relatively new standard which is bound to gain popularity in the coming months.

To back this project and pledge $29 for a 12V USB-C car charger for your new MacBook, visit the HydraDock Kickstarter page.

If you don't know what Kickstarter is, its a crowd-funding site where creators can raise funds to lower costs on interesting products and help manufacture them. As a backer, most campaigns offer rewards for your donation. Check out these Kickstarter FAQs for more details.

  1. Seems this Mikegyver.com has already selling car adapters for it.

  2. I bought a cheap chinese version of something like this for my MB Air. After a few months it started to melt near the tip.

I'm just saying this because the poor electrical connection of the tip into the cigarette lighter can be dangerous when pushing 30+ watts through it. It may heat up and melt down.

Once my unit melted it made a short which started to melt the wires leading up to it and smoking pretty badly.

Certainly never use one of these unattended.
