UPDATE: It looks like Apple may have skipped the wireless CarPlay feature in iOS 8.3. More details coming soon.
Apple has released iOS 8.3 today with a bunch of new features and bug fixes. The biggest addition to car entertainment is wireless CarPlay.
To use wireless CarPlay you will need a compatible vehicle or aftermarket head unit (none of which are available at the moment). But if you navigate to the Settings menu on your iPhone in iOS 8.3, you will now see a wireless CarPlay section added.
I had posted about iOS 8.3 when it was still in beta and what to expect from the wireless CarPlay feature. You can read that post here.
iOS 8.3 is available as an over-the-air download straight to your iDevice or through iTunes. If you use AppRadio Mode, it may be advisable not to upgrade until more details regarding bug fixes come to light in the next few days.
More details coming soon especially on how iOS 8.3 works with Pioneer AppRadio Mode and if any of the existing bugs have been fixed. Stay tuned.

iOS 8.3 allows you to use CarPlay without unlocking your phone by trusting your specific head unit. Thank goodness!
ReplyDeleteHi, I currently have a Pioneer AVH-4000NEX head unit with Carplay already installed (the wired one). So this means that iOS 8.3 update with Wireless Carplay is still not compatible with my head unit?
ReplyDeleteYes, none of the current Pioneer head units have a wifi chipset built in. The Alpine ILX-007 does, not yet activated by Alpine/Apple.
DeleteUnless there's a trick, I'm not connecting wirelessly to my Pioneer 4000NEX.
