Say Goodbye To Unlocking Your iPhone To Use CarPlay In iOS 8.3

Remember the prompt to unlock your iPhone each time you connect it to your CarPlay-capable head unit? Well, it's time to say goodbye to that pop-up!

Apple is finally giving users the option to stop the prompt from appearing and allow CarPlay to launch the moment you connect your iPhone to the head unit. iOS 8.3 which was released yesterday, has made that possible. More details are below.

I tested a Pioneer AppRadio 4 (SPH-DA120) and an iPhone 6 running Apple's latest iOS 8.3 firmware. After updating the iPhone and connecting it to the head unit for the first time, you will get the 'Unlock your iPhone to start CarPlay' prompt. Click through it and the following message pops up on your iPhone...

The pop-up message asks you whether to allow CarPlay to work with the "display unit" (in this case the AppRadio 4) while phone is locked. It also tells you that your contacts and other info will be visible from the car's display despite your phone being locked if you click 'Allow.'

If you would rather require the phone to be unlocked manually each time you connect to your car's head unit, you should tap 'Not Now' on that pop-up. But not being prompted to unlock your phone each time you hook it up makes it a little better, in my opinion.

Of course, if you use a Touch ID device, unlocking the iPhone means touching your finger to the home button, which isn't that big of a deal anyways.

The only thing that still appears is the standard warning screen from Pioneer advising users of safety restrictions while driving and using the head unit. This appears on the head unit itself and requires users to click 'OK' to be brought to the CarPlay homepage.
