Research Estimates 24 Million Vehicles To Have Apple CarPlay By 2019

According to a research report from ABI Research, Apple CarPlay is headed towards becoming the most popular in-car entertainment system within the next five years. The estimated popularity comes even before the software is available for use by consumers.

Automakers like Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo etc. are all going to feature CarPlay in their vehicles. Apple's fiercest competition will come from Google's Android Auto which was announced recently.

CarPlay and Android Auto are similar in what they bring to your car's dashboard albeit on different platforms. Features like navigation, music, phone functions, messages etc. are integrated in a safe-to-use interface. Voice assistants are at the center of both technologies allowing drivers to keep their eyes on the road while driving.

The ABI Research report says that by 2019, about 24 million vehicles will feature Apple CarPlay, making it the most popular software around. However, the report also estimates that Apple's closed ecosystem could force automakers to look at other open platforms to integrate in their dashboards.

Other systems like MirrorLink and Google's Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) will look more attractive to automakers since those claim to be "open source." This could mean that Android Auto would be preferred over CarPlay by automakers as time goes on but Apple's moniker behind CarPlay may make it more desirable to consumers.

It won't be long before you will need to ask your car dealer whether your smartphone is compatible with the new car you want to buy.
