Apple Is Bringing 'iOS In The Car' Through Car Manufacturers, But When?

At today's WWDC 2013 keynote, Apple announced a new feature, 'iOS in the Car'. It's designed to do what it says, bring Apple's mobile operating system to your car. With the help of iOS 7 which was announced today, 'iOS in the Car' will integrate your iOS device with your in-dash system. For this, your vehicle needs to be 'equipped with iOS in the Car'. Here are some more details.

From Apple's iOS 7 website

iOS in the Car. Best passenger ever.

iOS in the Car seamlessly integrates your iOS device — and the iOS experience — with your in-dash system. If your vehicle is equipped with iOS in the Car, you can connect your iPhone 5 and interact with it using the car’s built-in display and controls or Siri Eyes Free. Now you can easily and safely make phone calls, access your music, send and receive messages, get directions, and more. It’s all designed to let iPhone focus on what you need, so you can focus on the road.

Features
- Commute summary: iOS in the Car knows when you're leaving for work — or vice versa — and displays traffic conditions and your ETA.
- Siri handles calls: Siri will play back your voicemail and return missed calls, if you ask.
- iTunes Radio and more: Use your car's onboard controls for your music, including iTunes Radio, audiobooks, podcasts, third-party audio apps, and more.
- Navigate with Maps: Get turn-by-turn directions with Maps. Enter an address or let iOS in the Car serve up any address you received in an email or text.
- Get the message. And send one, too: Text messages appear right on your Car's display. Siri can read them to you while you listen over your car's speakers. And to reply, just dictate to Siri.

To avail of these new features Apple says your car needs to be 'equipped' with 'iOS in the Car'. That means only newer car models will support these features. Also on Apple's website it says 'Coming 2014' which means these features won't be available for consumers to avail of until 2014 car models are rolled out later this year. iOS 7 itself won't be available until this Fall. So we all have to wait.

What I'm curious about is whether these features will be usable with Pioneer AppRadio 3 or even the Alpine ICS-X7HD which both have Siri Eyes Free mode for iPhone. 'iOS in the Car' uses Siri Eyes Free at it's center. I guess time will tell. Siri has been supercharged in iOS 7 so until that becomes available in the Fall we won't know for sure if 'iOS in the Car' features are usable in third-party head units.

'iOS in the Car' will be available in 2014 from the following car manufacturers…

I want a car with iOS in it too!

  1. What about Appradio 2? Or are we going to be left having to buy a new radio?

    1. If 'iOS in the Car' works as an independent app then AppRadio 2 users might be in luck. But since AppRadio 2 doesn't have Siri Eyes Free Mode for iPhone (which Pioneer is promoting as a new feature for AppRadio 3) I don't see an easy workaround to get these new features in AppRadio 2. Maybe a firmware update at some point might bridge the gap a little. We'll know more in a few months I guess.

  2. It is also not known whether 'iOS in the Car' will require a physical connection (cable) or Bluetooth connection between the iPhone and the car's head unit to work. I'm guessing it's both.
