CarPlay And Android Auto Compatible App Umano Dies A Quiet Death
Umano, an app developed by a San Francisco startup called SoThree, has vanished. Well, maybe not vanished because we know what happened to it. The voiceover app that allowed voice actors to read news content was compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Google's Android Auto.
Here's what happened.
Dropbox, the popular cloud-storage company, has been on a buying spree in recent times. In typical fashion it went out and acquired Umano in May and later shut it down. Customers were informed that their paid subscription service was no longer going to be available in 30 days but no mention on the acquisition by Dropbox was made.
This is an excerpt from that message...
"Umano will continue running for the next 30 days until June 12, 2015...
... All annual premium subscribers have those 30 days to request a refund for the remainder of their subscriptions here."
The Umano team later posted this message on their website...
Dear Umano Community,
We’re thrilled to announce that the Umano team has joined Dropbox! Nearly three years ago, we had a vision to make content more accessible on mobile. Since then, we’ve helped millions of people become more knowledgeable and productive in today’s rapidly evolving world. We’re excited to take that experience and work with Dropbox to help people get more done together.
We can’t thank you all enough for continuing to inspire and motivate us over the past three years. It’s been a privilege to work with such an amazing set of investors, advisors, and dedicated partners.
If you would like to share your thoughts with us, or if you have questions, please feel free to reach out to us at support@umano.me.
Wishing you all the very best,
The Umano Team.
Well, it was a short journey for Umano on CarPlay and Android Auto. I used Umano in CarPlay on a couple of occasions and it worked quite well. I wasn't aware that the app was pulled from existence until I noticed it missing from the CarPlay and Android Auto app lists.
