Pioneer Discusses The Future Of AppRadio At CEA Line Shows 2012

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) Line Shows 2012 was held in New York City on June 27 and 28 this year. Pioneer Electronics was present at the event and there is some interesting information coming out from there regarding the AppRadio line of products. The AppRadio platform has really moved slowly towards improvement but it seems like things could be fast tracked in the coming few months.

According to Ted Cardenas, VP Marketing at Pioneer Electronics, the AppRadio mode or Advanced App Mode will be expanded to more models in the next few months. Advanced App Mode allows users to use smartphone apps on their car stereo. Currently five Pioneer models support this mode including the AppRadio and AppRadio 2. While all five models work with an iPhone 4/4S, only the AppRadio 2 supports Android phones. Hopefully future models will have Android support from the get go. And, interestingly enough, Pioneer plans to expand compatibility to other smartphone platforms in addition to iOS and Android.

The most interesting news for me was regarding the app development kits (SDK) which were promised by Pioneer at CES 2012. It's been 6 months since that announcement but there has been almost no news in that regard ever since. Pioneer has set up the website www.appradiodev.com which will deal with the development of apps to work with the AppRadio and other Advanced App Mode supported car stereos. You can sign up for more information in this regard by visiting the site right now and emailing Pioneer from there.

Pioneer posted updates from CEA Line Shows 2012 on its Facebook page. Among other things it was also mentioned that additional apps will be added to the AppRadio compatible list pretty soon. We'll keep an eye out for those.

  1. What's good about AppRadio is that it has multi-OS support. It's a great platform for both android and ipad application development enthusiasts to toy their skills with.
