What Does iOS 6 Mean For AppRadio?

Apple announced details about their upcoming version of iOS at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2012) in San Francisco earlier today. iOS 6 is packed with over 200 new features and will be available this Fall. Among the few new features that were outlined at the keynote address, one stood out for me with regards to Pioneer's AppRadio.

Apple is dumping Google Maps in it's next version of iOS in favor of it's own mapping software. The biggest addition to the Maps is free turn-by-turn voice navigation, something that the default Google Maps app didn't have. From the demos shown it looks very neat and tidy. So does this mean the beginning of the end for all the other paid navigation apps out there? Probably, yes!

The stock Maps app works with the AppRadio and I see no reason why the upcoming version won't. If the default app can do voice guided navigation, I don't see why I would need to use MotionX GPS Drive ($24.99 to use on AppRadio 2), Extra Mile ($1.99) or Navfree GPS (incidentally free too). The stock apps work well with AppRadio in general. The new Maps app gives us something nice to look forward to.

Another striking feature in iOS 6 is "Eyes Free". With this feature a selected number of car manufacturers will feature a Siri button on the steering wheel which will activate Siri when pressed without lighting up the iPhone. So there will be no need to even look at your phone while driving. Great! And, talking about Siri, I like the fact that you will now be able to launch apps with your voice. I think this is an awesome feature (tweak available with jailbreaking) to have while driving and wanting to switch apps with your AppRadio. Now, if only Pioneer could get rid of the annoying pop ups and warning screens!

More details about iOS 6 and it's features is available on Apple's website. There are certainly good things to come. Hopefully it will improve the AppRadio experience in the car too. Stay tuned for more.

    1. I installed iOS 6 Beta and it doesn't work with appradio. You can play ipod music through the unit but control from the appradio is limited to the transport buttons on the left hand side of the screen. Other than that the screen is blank. The strangest thing of it all is that if worked the first time I connected my phone but degraded as the appradio figured out that I upgraded the iOS.

    2. I have provided a link on the meaning of BETA just in case you weren't aware of its meaning.

    3. Thanks for the definition but I'm totally aware what BETA means. I was just letting the rest of you know that your phone will not work with the appradio if you load this BETA and hopefully someone else had some insight on what particular change broke the link and if there was a fix. Also, if the folks at Pioneer aren't working on this it still won't work when the software goes "gold".

  2. I have a feeling they would lock you out from being able to use the FREE navigation.

    1. I agree. Google Navigation is free on Android and to my knowledge, you can't use it through AppRadio 2...

Yeah me to!! Why did apple not provide third party manufacturers with some more and early information!??

However i'm glad to inform you that i used the appradio 2 with ios 6 GM without any problems. Maps works great however when you start navigation this is indeed not on the radio as is is a different ''app'' on the phone which does not support display out at this moment.

Also where are the news messages on the site??? no new updates?? appradio app just updates here with custom photoroll background and facebook/twitter integration...

    1. Was about to say the same thing about the news here. The app update wasn't that special since motion X has the ability to post your location as well. Backgrounds only work in the app menu so I got bored in 2 minutes. IF they did a update where time was in the corner like Pandora, I would stay on that app screen.

      /Rant

I originally came to see if the iOS was safe or would I have a radio only radio for 4-5 months. Glad to hear you can get it to work. Guess I will let you know if Motion X still works.

  5. ios 6 works! Everything on the appradio works fine - exactly as before. I thoroughly tested everything, except for ios maps navigation, which I'll test on my way home. The maps displayed fine. Very very good!

  9. A new cable will probably not help anything as the lightning cable doesnt support video out
