AppRadio Firmware Updates Available

Pioneer Electronics has posted firmware updates for their AppRadio line of products. Both, AppRadio (SPH-DA02) and AppRadio 2 (SPH-DA100) have received these updates which can be downloaded from Pioneer's website. Updates have to be performed the same way as before. Read on for more details.

AppRadio (SPH-DA02)
New firmware version: v4.16

What's new: The latest firmware update has added one major Settings option to the first generation AppRadio, the App Launch Assist feature. This function, when turned OFF, will not pop up the AppRadio app launch notification message on the AppRadio when the iPhone is first connected. The AppRadio app has to be launched from the iPhone itself. When this function is turned ON, a notification message is displayed on the AppRadio but the app launches by itself on the iPhone (iPhone screen needs to be unlocked). Does this sound a little confusing? It does to me. Can anyone let us know in the comments below if this function has improved the AppRadio experience?

The update file has to be downloaded on to a microSD card which is used to update the firmware (as before). Read the complete details from Pioneer's website by clicking here.

AppRadio 2 (SPH-DA100)
New firmware version: v8.17

What's new: Increased accuracy during touch panel use, improved recognition of devices connected with an MHL adapter, faster response when utilizing REAR VIEW mode.

There is no mention of an App Launch Assist feature like the one in AppRadio (SPH-DA02). Nothing else seems to have changed. Read the complete details from Pioneer's website by clicking here.

  1. I did the update on my AppRadio sph-da01 and it should be the same as the sph-da02 as the update descriptions are the same. On my AppRadio, if I leave the Launch Assist Setting on, when I connect my iPhone I get the "Now launching app..." message on the AppRadio and the pop up shows on the iPhone- but now when I press Ignore on the AppRadio, it takes me back to the same screen I was on. It used to take me to the black Apps screen.

If I turn Launch Assist off, nothing happens when I connect my iPhone. It doesn't take me out of the Radio screen or the home screen. The AppRadio acts as if nothing changed. When I press the Apps icon, the AppRadio screen simply says "Please launch Pioneer AppRadio app or other compatible app from your iPhone". No pop up on the phone or anything else.

The new app launch assist is much better than dealing with the pop ups on the appradio and on the phone every time I plugged in my phone.

I don't notice any differences with the radio bug fixes.

    Hope this helps!

  2. As for the SPH-DA100 models. I haven't done the firmware update yet. (Need to find a USB I know I have in the house! LOL) However for the Appradio app launching on the phone, I do NOT get a pop-up that I have to acknowledge like I have seen on the iPhones. Now I do have an Andriod phone not iPhone. My Appradio app just stays in the background running with "Ready to Connect" showing. Now it does take a good 30 to 60 seconds to connect completely. And I will show this on a video to be uploaded soon. So I hope that helps.

  3. I live in Canada, and the canadian Pioneer site is not showing this Update. I checked the USA Site and it is there. Do you recommend i wait until it is on the Canadian site before I update, or can i go ahead and do it?

  4. Element905- you should be okay, the firmware update page says for the AppRadio 2 says: "We would like to inform you of an important firmware update (version 08.17 released in July 2012) for the Pioneer AppRadio 2 (SPH-DA100) in-dash multimedia system. This firmware update applies only to AppRadio 2 units sold in the United States and Canada."

And the firmware update page for the AppRadio (SPH-DA02) says:
"We would like to inform you of the availability of a free firmware update (version 4.16 released in July 2012) for the Pioneer AppRadio™ SPH-DA02 in-dash multimedia system. This firmware update applies only to AppRadio SPH-DA02 units sold in the United States and Canada. "

    1. There is an update for the SPH-DA01 as well. I got an email from Pioneer letting me know. Here's the link:http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/AppRadio/AppRadio+%28SPH-DA01%29?tab=firmware

  7. I have tried the firmware on three different brands of USB sticks formatted as FAT with nothing else on them and it refuses to work. It displays an error that says something vague about "Cannot apply firmware up one version" blah blah blah "make sure it there is only one file installed" "disconnect and start over". I'm paraphrasing a lot because I can't remember exactly how it was worded. But basically, IT DOESN'T WORK! Not sure what I'm supposed to do now other than order the free update from Pioneer I guess.

  9. Are you a Mac or PC user? We tried it at the shop on the Mac on our sales floor and it wouldn't work, but it worked for me at home using my PC. It must have something to do with how a Mac formats a thumb drive?

    2. i took the update link from appradio france facebook page
      this one :
      http://www.pioneer.eu/fr/support/software/SPH-DA01/index.html

      i'm from europe anonymous, it's ok ( unless i've missed something...? )
you think i could make that mistake or maybe the link from pioneer is usa / canada firmware ?

      how to verify ?

    3. it's not the rds on center main screen...but the listed radio names we use to have upper the screen...on the "memory" line
the rds itself work on radio center main screen...

remember that the older version, could memorise bad the radio station name...
because the appradio don't know to "separate" the radio station name from radio music info displayed...
so i think pioneer "fool" us by keeping just the frequencies in memories...because of don't know to separe radio advertise info from radio station name...

      curious...

  11. Make sure it's a USB and not an external. I tried doing the update with an external and received the same message. Download file; extract to desktop; copy desktop file to USB....should be the only file on usb

  12. How do you get to the connection of the radio to hook up USB flash drive ?

  13. You need to plug the USB into the USB connector that is located about halfway down the Ipod cable. Unplug the Ipod connector that is connected via usb and plug youre usb drive into it.

  14. I was having the issue with my USB drive where I would get the "Cannot apply firmware up one version" error. I was saving the .HAT file from an Apple computer. I got a hold of a Windows 7 machine and reformatted the USB drive, but I unchecked the quick format option so it could reformat the USB drive thoroughly. Downloaded the .HAT file and placed it on the newly reformatted USB drive. Problem solved. I was getting pretty frustrated that the firmware wouldn't allow me to update.

    1. Yep, that way finally worked for me as well. I tried a windows quick format as fat32 and it didn't work. I then did what you said and picked Fat <--- Also known as Fat16, Not fat 32 with a slow <--- Not quick :) format. Worked perfect.
