JVC Kenwood's Android Auto + Apple CarPlay Head Units Are Still MIA
Back at CES 2015, aftermarket head unit manufacturer JVC Kenwood announced two new head units that would rival Pioneer's NEX receivers. Both the head units, the DDX9902S and DDX9702S, will offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, thereby pitting them against Pioneer's AVH-4100NEX, AVIC-7100NEX and AVIC-8100NEX.
Although no release date was mentioned back in January, a recent Facebook post offered a hint on a possible end of May release for the receivers. But the end of May has come and gone and there still isn't any news on a possible availability date.
If you are curious about these head units and especially how they might be priced, keep reading.
As far as pricing goes, although no official word has been released by the manufacturer, online retailer Crutchfield has listed prices for the two receivers, allowing buyers to preorder the items. No shipping date is available at this time though.
The prices listed by Crutchfield are as follows...
JVC Kenwood DDX9902S: $749.99
JVC Kenwood DDX9702S: $699.99
These prices are very competitive (if accurate). Comparatively, the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX, which is the entry level head unit that offers both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, has a suggested retail price of $700. The AVIC-7100NEX is priced at $1200 while the flagship AVIC-8100NEX will cost you $1400.
With Pioneer's head units, however, lower prices are available through online retailers like Amazon and eBay. Current prices for the three head units range between $525 and $890. For the latest, look for the latest price section in the right column of this website.
I have contacted JVC Kenwood via Twitter regarding the availability of their head units. I am awaiting a response and will report back if I receive one.
