Google's In-Car System May Be Called 'Google Projected Mode' [Rumor]

Google will compete in the car entertainment field with its own system after forming the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) with a bunch of car manufacturers. Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, is not a part of the OAA. But a recent job posting from the company may have given us an early insight into what Google's in-car system may be called.

According to Daimler (via a post on Engadget), Google may call the interface 'Google Projected Mode'.

It is still early days for the OAA with scarce (if any) details available at the moment. But according to the job advertisement by Daimler, the car company was seeking to employ a software engineer who can help them implement Google's forthcoming in-car system.

'Google Projected Mode' will reportedly integrate Android smartphones seamlessly into a dashboard's head unit. Also, the software is apparently "coming to all Mercedes-Benz vehicles in all markets worldwide." Would that mean a customer would have the option of choosing CarPlay or "Google Projected Mode" before buying a vehicle? Remains to be seen.

The word 'Projected' may raise some questions on how the Android UI would be displayed on the head unit. My guess is it won't actually be projected as in using a projector. Probably a combination of a wired connection and Bluetooth will be used between the smartphone and the car.

More details on the so called 'Google Projected Mode' should become available as this year rolls on, because the system has been promised by the end of 2014. The usual features like navigation, phone calls, music streaming etc. will be available for sure. Any additional features other than those will be known eventually.
