Here's Everything There Is To Know About CarPlay From Apple

CarPlay was announced today by Apple and car manufacturers at the Geneva Motor Show. It is Apple's official entry into the car entertainment market. Consumers can now have iOS in their dashboard, provided they own the right car of course!

Full details about CarPlay are available directly from Apple. But here is a list of what there is to know about the technology so far.

- CarPlay is "iOS in the Car" which was announced at WWDC 2013 in June of last year.

- According to Apple: "CarPlay is a smarter, safer way to use your iPhone in the car. CarPlay takes the things you want to do with your iPhone while driving and puts them right on your car's built-in display."

- CarPlay can be controlled with voice commands (Siri), touch input, and using the physical controls like knobs and buttons in your car. Apple says "if it controls your screen, it controls CarPlay."

- Apple's Maps application will provide the default navigation in CarPlay. Photos of the interface had surfaced last month from developers.

- Phone calls can be made using Siri. Handsfree phone functions are in keeping with traffic laws in most states.

- Read and reply to your messages using Siri too.

- Music: Apple's default Music app is included along with iTunes Radio. Additionally, third party music-streaming apps like Beats Music, iHeartRadio, Spotify, and Stitcher are also supported and will have dedicated CarPlay interfaces.

- Additional third-party apps: According to Apple's website, additional apps will be added to the the list of CarPlay supported apps.

- Car Manufacturers: The following car makers will have cars rolled out later this year with CarPlay...
Ferrari
Honda
Hyundai
Jaguar
Mercedes-Benz
Volvo

In the near future, these additional car companies will also integrate CarPlay in their vehicles...
BMW
Chevrolet
Ford
Kia Motors
Land Rover
Mitsubishi
Nissan
Opel
PSA Peugot Citroen
Subaru
Suzuki
Toyota

- iPhone Models: CarPlay is compatible with the following iPhones only...
iPhone 5
iPhone 5C
iPhone 5S

Opinion: From what is known so far, CarPlay seems like the perfect car entertainment system. If additional apps continue to be added to the interface, sky is the limit. CarPlay will blow all of its competitors out of the water.

CarPlay is an iOS 7 feature. Although unlikely, it is possible that the interface maybe allowed on external screens independently. Which means that devices like AppRadios may be able to display CarPlay on the screen. Whether touch controls will be available remains to be seen. My guess is, no chance!
