Ford SYNC Will Be Powered By BlackBerry; Microsoft Getting Dropped

Ford's next generation SYNC in-car technology system will be powered by BlackBerry and not Microsoft according to a report on Bloomberg last month. BlackBerry's QNX software will be used to program the new system.

Ford SYNC gives drivers voice-control over functions like phone calls, navigation and music. Microsoft has been powering past and current SYNC systems dating back to 2011. But the customer response has been mixed according to Ford.

Using BlackBerry's QNX over Microsoft will be less expensive for Ford and will improve the flexibility and speed of the SYNC system. QNX can already be found in Volkswagen AG's Audi unit and BMW.

Ford is wary of the entry of Google and Apple into the car infotainment markets. Improving SYNC will ensure Ford keeps up with the competition.
