Navfree GPS Should Be The Default Maps App On The AppRadio [Opinion]

Long gone are the days when Google Maps used to be the default Maps app on iOS and AppRadio. Back then the app used to actually work when used in AppRadio Mode. These days, the default Maps application on the AppRadio doesn't provide navigation. Even though it uses Google Maps it is quite useless.

There are quite a few alternatives to feed your navigational needs. Waze is one I use quite often. MotionX GPS Drive requires a $25 subscription to work with in AppRadio Mode. The Google Maps or Apple Maps applications aren't AppRadio compatible but can be used in mirroring mode.

There's one navigation app which has been quietly flying under the radar for quite a while now. The app is called Navfree GPS USA + Street View. It is free to download for iOS and Android.

Navfree fully AppRadio compatible (with a $1.99 in app purchase) but is well worth the price. There are other versions of Navfree available too depending on where you live.

The one big feature this app boasts is Google Street View. iOS users will agree with me when I say we've missed Street View on our phones ever since Apple ditched Google Maps as their default Maps application.

Navigation works without issues on Navfree. You can download local maps for offline use too. There is a separate download for each US State. Maps for Canada or Mexico can be purchased for $3.99 each.

Other in-app purchases include traffic overlays provided by INRIX ($1.99), parking locations by Parkopedia ($3.99), safety camera alert information by Cyclops ($19.99/year) and additional navigation voices.

Another cool feature is when your phone is connected to the AppRadio it shows your speed instead of showing a boring interface which says "connected to AppRadio". This way you can have a digital speed reading while driving.

You can download the latest version of Navfree GPS USA from the App Store or Google Play today.
